A couple of days ago I got a Facebook message from Tim Bowman asking me to promote his new book about teaching Forget Being the Favourite. Normally I only share displays stuff but I always check things out in case they have some relevance to displays. I’m glad I did and I think you will be too. I simply couldn’t put it down. I wished it had been around when I was training. It would have saved me a lot of pain and heartache. The book is not at all dry but bright and visual. Easy to read it is full of nuggets of teaching wisdom. I left a quick review on Amazon:

Tim  is a primary school teacher in Melbourne, Australia and he has written an extraordinary book that personally I think every NQT and student teacher should read.

Forget Being the Favourite is a very visual book and  although it is about teaching rather than displays I really wanted to share it here.

Apart from everything else it has around 80 images that would make wonderful staffroom posters.

Tim Bowman on Classroom Displays

Classroom displays have never been my strong point, even with a mum who is an art teacher. For me I’ve always focused on trying to make my displays as interactive where possible.

An example is getting each student to draw a self-portrait and then write a descriptive piece about his or her drawing. The images are then scattered all over the display and linked by pieces of string so students have to search to link the image with the writing.

Tim uses string again to good effect in this display:

My favourite display though is “Facewall”. Each student has a section, usually around the size of an A4 piece of paper. Each section has a clip at the top and students can put in anything they want, like a Facebook page. Kids put in the work they are most proud of, a photo of their dog, or a medal they won at football. It looks good, has value and is low maintenance (my kind of display).

Mine too. Don’t we all love low maintenance, high value displays?

    Hi Linda,

    Thanks very much for the post, but I thought I best clarify that the posters in the post aren’t actually in the book, although the is a lot of similar and related stuff.

    I’ve put the posters in a link though, so your readers can easily download them to print from Google Drive

    Maybe you could drop that link in the post so anyone can grab them.
